Tip #12: Start sharing this truth: Life is not fair. Never was. And that’s okay.
There is a sense of freedom when you let go of the idea that life must be fair. The alternative is living with a victim’s sense of entitlement – such a narrow, constricting way to live.
When the real world consequences hit in the Acton studio my children have come home with the predictable: “but it’s not fair.” This old story helps unravel such thinking and is a fun tale anyway.
While life is not fair, there is a rhythm to it as nature reveals to us daily. When we help our children – and ourselves – tune into that rhythm, the dance of passionate living begins. (And we know that “passion” includes suffering.)
Rumi, the 13th century Persian poet said: “Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
